NMIMR goes to Onyaadze Community

 The Institute as part of its 40th Anniversary Celebration activities held a free health screening and donation of some medical items to the people of the Gomoa Onyaadze Community in the Central Region dubbed NMIMR goes to the community. The health outreach was held on Wednesday, 23rd October, 2019 at the Noguchi Memorial Health Centre.

This forms part of the NMIMR corporate social responsibility in giving back to the society. The Institute, as part of its social responsibility, established the Noguchi Memorial Clinic at Onyaadze in the Central Region of Ghana with support from the Japanese government. Onyadze is currently one of the seven health sub-districts in the Gomoa West District. The District has an estimated population size of 11,215. The Noguchi Memorial Health Centre is a sub-district Centre with a catchment covering 12 communities and 4 CHPS zones.

 Researchers and staff from the Institute as well as some medical staff from Noguchi Memorial Health Centre attended and assisted to make the health outreach a success.

 Over 250 people from  Onyaadze Community were attended to and screened for the following diseases: HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Nutrition, Tuberculosis, Blood pressure, Yaws, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis.  Participants also received free X-ray as part of the Tuberculosis test. Dr. Michael Ofori, a Senior Research Fellow who led the NMIMR delegation in welcoming all explained that Health screening outreach and donations were the Institute’s way of giving back to the community.
The Institute  donated  500 bed nets, Two Fridges, Two office chairs, 10 plastic chairs, 34 pieces of mackintosh, examination screen etc.  We also distributed second hand clothes and foot wears to the people and school children of Onyaadze.

 Mr. Clement Bayor, District Health Director who received the items on behalf of the Centre expressed his profound gratitude to the staff of NMIMR for the donation, stating that they would be put to a good use immediately to serve the people of Onyaadze and its environment.

 The Physician Assistant of the Health Centre, Ms Stella Aikins added that the donation would go a long way to help the centre and all the 12 communities that benefit from the facility. She then urged government and other institutions to provide other equipment to improve the health centre.
