Dr. Sedegah receives Dr. Nathan Davis Awards

Dr. Martha Sedegah, Director, Clinical Immunology and Parasitology Malaria Department, Naval Medical Research Center, has received the Dr. Nathan Davis Awards for outstanding Government Service. This award named for the founder of the American Medical Association, Dr. Nathan Davis aimed to recognize significant accomplishment to advanced public health.

Dr. Sedegah established research collaboration with Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research (NMIMR) in Legon, Ghana, that continues to this day. Currently, she is working with her colleagues at NMIMR to study a population in Ghana that is semi-immune to malaria to guide the design of a novel vaccine approach.

Dr. Sedegah is a native from Ghana who has witnessed first hand the devastation caused by malaria, began her career at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) as a malaria researcher nearly four decades ago. She moved into civil service as a microbiologist in the Malaria Department at the NMRC in 2001, and today she serves as the center’s director of clinical immunology and parasitology.

She has dedicated her career to malaria vaccine research and has distinguished herself as a pioneer in the field. Her mouse malaria model is used worldwide for pre-clinical studies of malaria immunology and candidate malaria vaccines. She developed the first DNA vaccine tested in humans and conducted the experiments that led to the design of the first clinical trial of the PfSPZ vaccine, one of the leading malaria vaccine candidates.

Dr. Sedegah, the author or co-author of more than 115 research papers and book chapters, holds five US patents and three foreign patents. She is an adjunct professor at the University Of Maryland School of Medicine and is the founder and director of the Akumaning –Brewu Foundation, a nonprofit organization that enhances primary and secondary school education in rural Ghana. The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), set up in 1979 as a semi autonomous institute of the University, is the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana.
