Call for Applications: Clinical studies monitoring workshop:July 16-18 2019

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana, is organizing a training workshop in the monitoring of clinical studies and trials, from July 16-18 2019.

Monitoring clinical studies is essential as it ensures value for money, and the safety, rights and well-being of study participants. Through this workshop participants will gain a firm understanding of the basic principles of the ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles and the importance of monitoring. They will also acquire the tools to undertake self-assessments in preparation for external assessments. It is hoped that these skills will be useful in putting the learning into practice, and developing the capabilities of IRBs, ERCs and clinical researchers in monitoring trials.

This workshop is organized with funding from the UNICEF/UNDP/World bank/ WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), World Health Organization, and aims to:

·         strengthen institutional review boards (IRB), ethics review committees (ERC) and researchers in the monitoring and evaluation of clinical studies.

·         develop the internal capabilities of IRBs, ERCs and research organizations in monitoring clinical studies.

This will be a 3-day training workshop covering important topics such as ICH GCP; trial site evaluation and set up; trial monitoring and close-out, essential documents, source data/document verification; preparing for audits and/or inspections. The TDR global competency framework for clinical research (https://globalhealthtrials.tghn.org/global-competency-framework-clinical-research/) will be used in assessing the competency of the participants and in developing the training agenda, to ensure that the training is tailored appropriately.

The workshop is targeted at core IRB/ERC personnel, and researchers planning or running clinical studies and trials. Certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the workshop. Full attendance is required from all selected participants.

The participation in the course is free. Accommodation will be covered for selected participants from outside Accra. For participants within Accra, daily transportation allowance will be offered.
