Electron Microscopy and Histopathology


Dr. Francis E. Dennis is a research fellow in the Department of Electron Microscopy and Histopathology, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana. He joined NMIMR in 2007 as an MPhil research student, and subsequently worked in the department from 2008-2010, first as a Senior Research Assistant and then as a Principal Research Assistant. Upon being awarded a Japanese Government Scholarship (MONBUSHO), he left for Japan in 2010 to pursue his PhD degree, returned to his department at NMIMR after successful completion in 2014, and was subsequently appointed Research Fellow in January 2016. Francis has a PhD (2014) in Medical Science from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University. He also has B.Sc. (2004) and M.Phil. (2008) degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Ghana, and was a recipient of the inaugural University of Ghana Graduate Fellowship. He serves as a core staff of the West Africa Regional Rotavirus Reference Laboratory and has been involved in training laboratorians within the sub-region in rotavirus isolation, detection and characterization.

Research Interests

·         Molecular diagnostics and epidemiology of diarrhoea-causing pathogens, especially viruses, in humans and animals

·         Using genomic epidemiological tools to answer questions of public health importance in diarrhoeal diseases, including the influence(s) of pathogen genetic diversity on intervention strategies





·         Correlation between histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) and serum antibody response to rotavirus vaccine in Ghanaian children. CDC (Co-Investigator)
