COVID-19 NATIONAL TRUST FUND DONATES 2.3 MILLION GHANA CEDIS TO THE NOGUCHI MEMORIAL INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH TOWARDS RESEARCH INTO COVID-19 VACCINE INDUCED IMMUNITY AMONGST GHANAIANS

The COVID-19 National Trust Fund has presented a donation of Two Million, Two Hundred and Seventy-Two Thousand, Seven Hundred and Sixty-Two Ghana Cedis, and Eighty Pesewas (GHc2,272,762.80) to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) to conduct research into the  effect of COVID-19 vaccines on Ghanaians.

The Donation Agreement was signed in Accra on Tuesday . 9th August, 2022.  Signing on behalf of the Trust Fund was Dr. William Collins Asare, Administrator of the Fund and Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu , Director of the Institute.

The main objective of the study is to measure and compare immune responses amongst persons who have received different COVID-19 vaccines and determine how long the vaccine mediated protection lasts. The results of this study will help determine the frequency of booster shots that may be necessary to maintain immunity against COVID-19 over time and inform policy at the national level. The study is expected to be completed in 18 months.

The COVID-19 National Trust Fund identifies NMIMR as an important stakeholder in the search for domestic solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic. The partnership between the two institutions will contribute to the generation of data to inform the effectiveness of the said vaccines within the Ghanaian population, with the identification of potential factors that may be  important for how individuals respond to the different vaccines.. The NMIMR takes this opportunity to thank the National COVID-19 Trust fund and the Government of Ghana, for this very timely donation and pledges its continued support for the Ghana Health Services efforts at curbing the COVID-19 disease.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), set up in 1979 as a semi autonomous institute of the University, is the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana.
