The University of Ghana Health Services and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research has formed a Joint Emergency Response Team (UG ERT) to prevent, detect, diagnose and contain any possible outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at University of Ghana Campuses and the country at large.



Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include:

  • Frequent hand washing with soap under running water or use alcohol-based hand rubs.
  • Covering mouth and nose with tissue or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing.
  • Wash hands afterwards and discard the tissue.
  • Do not shake hands.
  • Avoid touching your face: eyes, nose, mouth, ears.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone with fever and cough.
  • If you have a fever, cough or difficulty in breathing avoid crowded places and seek medical care.
  • If you become sick while travelling, inform the crew, seek medical attention and share your travel history.
  • Avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals.



The following awareness creation activities are being promoted:

  • Leaflets and posters to educate students and staff on preventive and reporting procedures (in lecture halls, conference facilities, departments’ offices, porters lodges, cafeterias and guest centres).
    • Look out for typical signs and symptoms of COVID-19 infections in the leaflets and posters. 
    • Look out for prevention and reporting procedures for COVID-19.
  • Awareness information will be displayed on digital advertising boards of the university.
  • There will be weekly circulation of questionnaires to the university community for effective monitoring to pick up suspected cases.
  • The UG Health Services Directorate is contacting the health establishments in sister universities to share response mechanism.



Detection, Diagnosis and Containment

  • NMIMR will continue its role as the national receiving point and testing of samples from health institutions in the country and the sub-region.
  • Handwashing and alcohol-based sanitizers will be positioned at vantage places for students and staff.
  • Training on handwashing and use of alcohol-based sanitizers to staff and students is ongoing.
  • Student representatives have joined the UG ERT to enhance stakeholder involvement.
  • NMIMR has delivered five (5) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and swabs to the University Hospital for identification of cases and containment.
  • The University hospital will screen all patients and visitors at the entry points to the hospital to flag suspected cases and isolate them.
  • All patients who are flagged will be taken to isolation and holding areas.


  • UG has allocated three (3) bungalows for quarantining of suspected cases.
  • Students and staff coming from China and those with travel history will be screened at the hospital and student clinics.
  • All confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection will be transferred to Ridge Hospital immediately.
